The Bashkir Research Institute for Agriculture is a prominent scientific center for agrarian science in the system of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It was founded in 1956 on the basis of the Chishminskaya Experinent Station, founded in 1912, and it is the only scientific institution for agriculture, which elaborates and coordinates research projects for the agro-industrial complex of the republic.

 

Historic summary

The Bashkir Research Institute for Agriculture dates back to the former Chishminskaya Agricultural Experiment Station the oldest agricultural scientific institution in the Ural region. It was founded in March 1912 and played an important role in creating the scientific basis of agriculture in the Ufimskaya province, later the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and the neighboring regions. The first director and research instructor of the experiment station was a famous scientist, professor A.N.Prokhorov. The study of effective methods of soil cultivation, fertilizing, time and standards of sowing agricultural crops, grasssowing of high quality seeds was started here for the first time in the republic.

In 1937 the Chishminskaya Experiment Station got an independent status as the Chishminskaya State Selection Station. The main task of the selection station became raising new highly productive sorts of agricultural crops for collective and state farms of Bashkortostan.

In 1956 on the base of the Chishminskaya Selection Station and other agricultural experiment research institutions of the republic the Bashkir Research Institute for Agriculture was founded.

Structure of the Institute

The Institute comprises 6 scientific departments, 19 laboratories, 2 zone laboratories in the cities of Sibay and Durtuly. 126 research workers, including 1 academician and 1 corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, 1 academician and 2 corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of Bashkortostan, 7 doctors and 58 candidates of sciences work at the Institute. The Institute includes 8 experiment-production farms, situated in different zones of Bashkortostan: Chishminskoye, Kazangulovskoye, Sterlitamakskoye, Ufimskoye, Baymakskoye, Birskoye, Mechetlinskoye, and Kushnarenkovsky Experiment Garden.

The whole agricultural area is 26 961 hectare, including 21 661 hectare of arable land. Experiment-production farms produce 8-10 thousand tons of the highest quality seeds annually. Primary seed production of 25 crops and regional and perspective varieties is carried out in different areas of Bashkortostan.

The science-production center Seeds has been recently founded to make the integration of science and farming more active, to use new local and perspective varieties of crops for systematic renovation. The center functions on the principles of market economy by signing contracts with experiment farms and regional seed producing farms under the scientific guidance of the Institute.

The Institute also includes 2 pedigree animal farms, specializing in the Bestuzhevskaya breed of cows (Birskoye experiment-production farm) and the Simmental breed of cows (Baymakskoe experiment-production farm), 4 pedigree animal farms, specializing in the Black-motley breed, 2 pedigree animal farms for Bashkir horses (Baymakskoe and Birskoye experiment-production farms).

The enterprise Plem, founded this year, aims at introducing scientific achievements in animal husbandry to farm practice.

 

Main Scientific Achievements

The scientists of the Institute have created more than 80 varieties of agricultural crops, 51 varieties have been included to the State Bank of Selection Achievements. This varieties are annually planted on the area of more than 4 million hectares in CIS and Russia, including 1 million in Bashkortostan.

The most remarkable achievements are the varieties of winter rye Chulpan, Chulpan 7 (S.A.Kunakbaev, N.I Leshchenko and others), peas Chishminskaya 242, Chishminskaya 75, Chishminskaya 80, Chishminskaya 95 (V.H.Hangildin, B.K. Popov), buckwheat Chishminskaya, Demskaya, Ufimskaya (A.M.Sabitov), sudan grass Tugai, Izumrudnaya, Severanka, Chishminskaya early (A.H.Biktimirov, F.H.Lukmanova), black current Bobrovaya, Valovaya, and golden current Leysan, Shafak, Venera (M.G. Abdeeva), a number of grapes varieties (L.N. Strelyaeva).

The Institute also elaborated a changeable spiral body -2035 and a two-tiered body K-3035 for general purpose ploughs. A combined soil cultivating implement -3 was recommended for serial production.

A great amount of research work is carried out on forage production. The possibility to organize green conveyors with the period of usage 160-165 days on the basis of fodder crop rotation have been proved. Research work on raising a good harvest of fodder crops without reducing the content of humus in soil is under way. The Institute also works on effective methods of increasing the productivity of slope haymaking by drilling bean-cereal grass combinations.

Considerable research work is carried out on animal husbandry: selection, horse-breeding and pig-breeding, elaboration of ecologically friendly technologies of producing animal husbandry products. One of the tasks is to maintain the unique native branch mare milk processing. Professor I.A.Saigin was the first in this country to work out a scientifically grounded technology of dairy horse-husbandry, which allows to raise normally developed foals of full value and to get 1800-2400 kilograms of milk from a mare during lactation period. For the first time in the world the technology of industrial drying of mare milk has been worked out. After restoration the milk is used to make a diet product kumys.

After years of research the following books have been published: Minimal cultivation and reproduction of typical chernozem fertility, Systemic husbandry, The basis of the systemic method in the agroindustrial complex of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Formation of the regional market of farm products in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Cultivation of barley in Bashkortostan, booklet Adaptive systems of agriculture and agrotechnology of grain crops in Zauralie.

The scientists of the Institute have worked out and recommended for practical usage: Scientifically grounded systems of agriculture in the Bashkir ASSR, Scientifically grounded systems of animal husbandry in the Bashkir ASSR, System of intensive horticulture in the kolkhozes and sovkhozes of the BASSR, scientific basis of crop rotation, adaptive-landscape agriculture, soil fertility reproduction, recourses-saving technologies of grain, sugar and fodder beet, potato, sunflower, fodder crops cultivation, and animal husbandry technologies. Biological systems of plant protection are elaborated on the basis of the newly invented bio-preparation Phytosporin.

 

International Scientific And Technical Collaboration And Links Within Russia

Research work is conducted according to the contracts with the Swiss firm Novartis and the German firm AgrEvo on study of new effective means of plant protection.

In cooperation with the Norwegian Research Park OC the scientists of the Institute carry out research work on mare milk processing technologies.

Together with the Ukrainian Institute of Microbiology and Virusology a new bio-preparation Phytosporin for protecting plants from a number of diseases was created.

The institute has close links with other scientific agricultural institutions of Russia.
